It was formed by nationalizing the insurance industry, which was previously run by a number of local and foreign private companies. It maintained a monopoly in the insu rance industry until the National Insurance Corporation was established in 1980. In 1988, the insurance industry was liberalized by allowing private companies to enter the market.
The corporation was converted to a fully government-owned limited liability corporate entity in 1993 with the goal of providing greater autonomy to operate in this environment. In April 2003, it was sold to the "Distilleries-Spence Consortium" as part of the Government Privatization Plan. As a result, it was incorporated as a subsidiary of Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka PLC.
Sri Lanka Insurance purchased Lanka Hospitals Corporation PLC in November 2006, which owns and operates Apollo Hospitals Colombo, a 350-bed state-of-the-art health care facility.
